Beginner JAZZ PIANO Chords, Voicings and Exercises – Course PART 1

For players who know basic major and minor chords and want a richer, jazzier sound. Every lesson has animations above the keys: chord names, interval formulas and the notes I play, at the moment I play them.

  1. 01

    Piano voicings

Why the 3rd and the 7th matter most, why you can leave out the root and the 5th, and how it works for other chords (A♭maj9, Gm7, Cm9).

  2. 02

    Major and minor 9th voicings

    A full Cmaj9 voicing (3, 7, 1, 9, 5, 7, 9), vi – IV – V7 – I, then Am7 – Fm6/9 – G7♯5 – Cmaj9, and turning it into a minor 9th.

  3. 03

    13#11 voicings

    The voicing 3, ♭7, 9, ♯11, 13 in Cmaj9 – B♭13♯11 – Am7 – D13♯11 – Dm9 – D♭13♯11 – Cmaj9, plus an easier version.

  4. 04

    Dominant 7th b9 voicings

    C7♭9 (3, ♭7, 1, ♭9, 5), two ways to find it through a diminished 7th chord, and Gm9 – C7♭9 – Fmaj9 in F.

  5. 05

    Minor 7th b5 chords

Seventh chords of natural minor, replacing iv with Dm7♭5, and its inversions Fm6 and A♭6♭5.

  6. 06

    bVII9 chord tensions

    Instead of G7 in C major, B♭9 on the flattened 7th degree, the left-hand voicing, and I – IV – ♭VII9 – Imaj9 in all keys.

  7. 07

    Stacked chord voicings

One note (E♭) in the left hand under every chord of the scale, then A♭maj9 – B♭9 – E♭maj9.

  8. 08

    13th chords for bluesy endings

G13 voicings, 13th chords inside a progression in F, and tritone substitutions such as A♭13 for a bluesy finish.

  9. 09

    Funky chord transitions

    Am7 – Dm7 – G7♯5 – Cmaj7 – Em6/9 – Am6/9 and chromatic minor 7th chords moving down and up.

About me

My name is Goran. I bought my first keyboard in 2008 and learned to play by ear, long before I learned any theory. Since then I've played professionally in restaurants, clubs, concert halls and on city squares, mostly as the rhythm section: bass, chords and fills.

Since 2021 I've been teaching online, on my YouTube channel and in my online keyboard school, which so far has been in Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian. These English courses are for everyone else.

Questions

Everything you need to know before you start.

How do I buy a course?

Write to me on WhatsApp, Viber or by email and tell me which course you want, or all four. I send you the price and the payment details (card or PayPal), and after payment the lessons are shared with your Gmail on Google Drive.

Can I buy just one course?

Yes. Every course can be bought on its own, and all four together cost less than buying them one by one.

In what order should I take them?

If theory is new to you, start with Online Piano Lessons: intervals, scales, chords, inversions, 7th chords and extensions, then harmonic functions, secondary dominants and tritone substitutions. If you already know triads and 7th chords, go straight to Jazz PART 1, then PART 2, and finish with the solo course on modes.

Is there a course for complete beginners?

Yes: Online Piano Lessons starts from the very first step, the intervals, and goes all the way to functional harmony, cadences and modal interchange, in 28 lessons. Lesson 17 is your first song.

Who is Jazz Piano PART 1 for?

For players who already know basic major and minor chords and want a richer, jazzier sound: rootless and stacked voicings, 9th, 13th and altered chords (13#11, 7b9, m7b5), bVII9 tensions, bluesy endings and funky transitions.

What does PART 2 add?

Rootless chord voicings, tritone substitutions, exotic scales for soloing, the modes in depth, the bII reharmonization method, ending phrases, soloing over diatonic scales, and two progressions worked through in detail: 3-1-4-7 and 1-3-6-4-7.

What does a lesson look like?

A fixed camera shows my hands on the keys from above, so you see every key I press. In Jazz PART 1, animations above the keyboard show the chord names, interval formulas and the notes I play at the moment I play them. Every lesson is spoken in English.

Do I need to read sheet music?

No. Everything is shown on the keys, with note names and chord symbols, so you can follow by watching and listening.

What instrument do I need?

Any piano or keyboard. You do not need a grand piano or 88 keys; a keyboard with 61 keys is enough for the voicings in these courses.

How do I watch the lessons?

The lessons are shared with your Google account (Gmail) on Google Drive. You watch them on your phone, tablet or computer, whenever you want.

How long do I have access?

Unlimited: the lessons stay shared with your Gmail, so you can come back to them as often as you need.

How do I pay?

By card or PayPal. Write to me and I will send you the price and the payment details for the course you want.

Can I ask you questions?

Yes. Write to me on WhatsApp, Viber or by email and I will answer you myself.
